Nigeria’s history in the World Cup

The Nigerian football team, also referred to as the Super Eagles by many are the three-time winners of the Africa Cup of Nations with their last title in 2013. The Super Eagles have also have a deep history  in the World Cup even though this year the team  were unavailing  in their attempt to qualify for the renowned tournament.

When they placed fifth in the FIFA rankings in April 1994, the team was at its best. This was the highest FIFA ranking that an African football team has ever attained. As of 2022, the team has competed in six of the past seven FIFA World Cups, only missing the 2006 tournament that was held in Germany. They have also advanced to the round of 16 three times.

In 1994, the Nigerian football team made it’s debut in the World Cup. The coach during the period of 1989 to 1994 was Clemens Westerhof and it was due to his charismatic leadership that led the team to qualify. The team dominated their 1994 World Cup group which included Greece, Bulgaria and Argentina. In their opening match, the Super Eagles overcame Bulgaria 3-0 but fell to Argentina 1-2. In spite of their loss to Argentina, Nigeria were able to take first place in the group due to their triumph against Greece. Nigeria defeated Italy in the second round courtesy to a goal from Emmanuel Amunike at the 25-minute mark. The team was seconds away from advancing to the quarterfinals when Roberto Baggio scored to force extra time. He also contributed to the eventual victory. The Italians won 2-1 in the final score.

Nigeria made it’s return to the Worlcup in 1998. This time, they were led by a different coach, Bora Milutinovic however the majority of the team remained the same as the 1994 lineup. Nigeria was placed in Group D together with nations like Bulgaria, Spain, and Paraguay. Nigeria surprised the European squad, Spain, in the inaugural match by defeating them 3-2. Before Sunday Oliseh scored the game-winning goal in the second half, the Super Eagles battled back from behind in the second part of the game. The team advanced to the second round and was assigned to play Denmark after beating Bulgaria and succumbing to Paraguay. Regrettably, a 1-4 loss against Denmark ended the Super Eagles hopes of making it to the world cup quarterfinals.

Following the previous world cups, the 2002 World Cup was a major disappointment for the Super Eagles as the team barely made it into the tournament. It was an even bigger disappointment for Nigeria, when the team failed to win any matches that year. However, the team had their work cut out for them because they were placed in Group F which included very strong teams like Sweden, Argentina  and England. The Nigerian team put up a fight with a strong defense however it was all in vain against all the teams. It only kept getting worse for the Nigerian Team as in the 2006 World Cup the team failed to qualify.

Things took a turn for the better in 2010, when the team qualified for the World Cup again after their win against Kenya. However, after a very contentious header by the Gabriel Heinze the team lost against Argentina. Whilst playing against Greece, Nigeria were in the lead as the result of a goal scored by Kalu Uche however a red card was given to Sani Kaita and this gave Greece the upper hand. In the final match in the group stage which was against South Korea Nigeria started off in the lead as the player Kalu Uche scored  goal early in the game. The team however, lost to South Korea  later on in the game with South Korea winning with a 2-1 lead. South Korea went into the round of 16 while Nigeria was eliminated from the 2010 World Cup after earning just one point.

In the 2014 World Cup, Nigeria was placed in Group F with Iran, Argentina, and Bosnia. The team played a scoreless tie with Iran before defeating Bosnia 1-0 however Nigeria lost to Argentina in the final group game. In the round of 16 Nigeria had to face France as their opponent. Pogba’s goal in the 79th minute and Super Eagles Captain Joseph Yobo’s unintentional own goal in injury time earned France a 2-0 victory over Nigeria. Nigeria was ousted from the FIFA World Cup in the round of 16 for the third time, as they were unable to advance to the quarterfinals.

The latest World Cup for the Nigerian team was in 2018. Argentina, Iceland and Croatia were all placed in the same group as the Super Eagles. Ahmed Musa scored both goals as the squad defeated Iceland 2-0 after losing their opening encounter of the tournament 0-2 against Croatia in Kaliningrad. Nigeria was eliminated from the competition after their final game against Argentina, which ended in a 1-2 loss for Nigeria.

    Nigeria 2022

Unfortunately the Super Eagles fans will not be seeing their favourite team compete in the World Cup 2022. Nigeria’s Super Eagles lost against Ghana on away goals, and as a result, they did not advance to the 2022 World Cup. Even though the final score in Abuja was 1-1 and 1-1 overall, Ghana’s away goal gave them the World Cup ticket and left the Super Eagles without one. Following a 1-1 draw on the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja with the Super Eagles of Nigeria, Ghana earned a third consecutive World Cup spot. In the 10th minute, Thomas Partey’s long-range strike miraculously managed to get past Francis Uzoho and give Ghana the lead. As a result, the Eagles, who had held the Black Stars to a scoreless draw in Kumasi, fell short at the very last moment despite having practically everything going their way.

    World Cup 2022 – Predictions

Even though the Super Eagles won’t be gracing your television screens in the 2022 World Cup, it is still the biggest and most exciting football event for all football fans. This year the infamous tournament will be held in Qatar and for the first time ever it will take place from November 21 to December 8th whilst having  32 teams placed in eight different groups.

    Group A predictions

    Matchday 1 picks
    Senegal 1, Netherlands 0
    Qatar 2, Ecuador 2

    Matchday 2 picks
    Qatar 0, Senegal 2
    Netherlands 2, Ecuador 1

    Matchday 3 picks
    Ecuador 1, Senegal 1
    Netherlands 3, Qatar 0

Senegal kicks off the World Cup with a bang, going back in time by 20 years to their shocking victory over France to begin play in Japan and South Korea. The main difference this time is that they defeated the Dutch with little surprise, putting them on track to win Group A. With Moises Caicedo shining for a team that seems destined for great things in 2026, the Netherlands come back to finish second, narrowly ahead of an Ecuador side that gives them a real concern in the second round of group games. With the likes of Virgin Van Dijk on the team, Netherlands will surely be at an advantage with the return of this start player. Qatar, on the other hand, doesn’t exhibit many signs of a host’s bounce.

    Group B Predictions

    Matchday 1 picks
    England 2, Iran 0
    United States 1, Wales 1

    Matchday 2 picks
    Wales 0, Iran 0
    England 3, United States 0

    Matchday 3 picks
    Wales 1, England 1
    Iran 0, United States 1

With a decisive victory over the United States on Black Friday, England cruised to the top spot after their first two games. The national passion in that area of the United Kingdom cannot be completely subdued by even a repetition of the lackluster performance against a Home Nation, when John Stones scored late to prevent them from losing to Wales. However, it deals a devastating blow to Welsh prospect. The USA, meanwhile, has the most skilled squad. Gregg Berhalter and his young team may struggle with a lack of tournament experience, but they should have enough to go to the Round of 16, even if Iran will be a lot tougher opponent than many might anticipate.

    Group C

    Matchday 1 picks
    Argentina 2, Saudi Arabia 0
    Mexico 1, Poland 2

    Matchday 2 picks
    Poland 1, Saudi Arabia 0
    Argentina 3, Mexico 1

    Matchday 3 picks
    Poland 0, Argentina 1
    Saudi Arabia 0, Mexico 0

Things are looking bright for Lionel Messi and his beloved country, as this could be his opportunity to win the coveted World Cup trophy. Argentina is currently undefeated in 31 games, which is the longest streak in international football, and has finally provided Messi with the kind of support system he was missing from past World Cups. Mexico is also set to aim for the round of 16 but Poland could give them a run for their money as the powerhouse Robert Lewandowski is currently the top goal scorer in the entire tournament.

    Group D

    Matchday 1 picks
    Denmark 2, Tunisia 0
    France 3, Peru 0

    Matchday 2 picks
    Tunisia 1, Peru 2
    France 0, Denmark 1

    Matchday 3 picks
    Peru 0, Denmark 0
    Tunisia 0, France 2

Denmark advanced all the way to the quarterfinals at Euro 2021, and Kasper Hjulmand’s squad built on that success with an outstanding World Cup qualification campaign. Currently, no team has won the World Cup championship consecutively since Brazil in 1958 and 1962 so for France the team will have to face the burden of them being the defending champions of the cup. Even though Didier Deschamps’ team has struggled since their victory in Russia in 2018, this could be one of the more unbalanced groups.

    Group E Predictions

    Matchday 1 picks
    Germany 2, Japan 0
    Spain 0, Costa Rica 0

    Matchday 2 picks
    Japan 1, Costa Rica 1
    Spain 2, Germany 1

    Matchday 3 picks
    Japan 0, Spain 1
    Costa Rica 0, Germany 2

After a disappointing World Cup 2018, Luis Enrique has revitalized a Spain team that desperately needed creative solutions. Spain has one of the most dynamic, young teams out there thanks to players like Pedri and Gavi, so they shouldn’t be written out as contenders. Germany is going through a generational change right now, but it still poses a threat. Expect the two heavyweights to advance even if Japan and either Costa Rica or New Zealand could play spoiler.

    Group F Predictions

    Matchday 1 picks
    Morocco 1, Croatia 1
    Belgium 2, Canada 1

    Matchday 2 picks
    Belgium 2, Morocco 2
    Croatia 0, Canada 0

    Matchday 3 picks
    Croatia 1, Belgium 1
    Canada 1, Morocco 0

This group is full of excitement. Every team is in the mix going into the final round of games as the Europeans strive to mislead. Morocco may have been the best team in Group F after rallying from two goals down to draw with Belgium, but they are defeated at the very last minute by a focused, united Canada team that chooses the right opportunity to win their first World Cup match. Even though Canada hasn’t qualified for the World Cup since 1986, this team is as  determined as ever to take it home. Some might consider Croatia, who finished second in the 2018 World Cup, to be the favorite to win Group F with Belgium, but Zlatko Dalic’s team is an aging one.

    Group G Predictions

    Matchday 1 picks
    Switzerland 0, Cameroon 1
    Brazil 2, Serbia 0

    Matchday 2 picks
    Cameroon 3, Serbia 2
    Brazil 1, Switzerland 0

    Matchday 3 picks
    Serbia 0, Switzerland 1
    Cameroon 1, Brazil 3

Brazil, the top-ranked team in the world, is deservingly given the spotlight in a Group G that is otherwise stacked with talented teams. Even though both Serbia and Switzerland both remained undefeated whilst qualifying , Serbia has an advantage in attacking talent thanks to Dusan Vlahovic, Dusan Tadic, and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, which might make all the difference.

    Group H predictions

    Matchday 1 picks
    Uruguay 2, South Korea 1
    Portugal 0, Ghana 0

    Matchday 2 picks
    South Korea 1, Ghana 1
    Portugal 0, Uruguay 2

    Matchday 3 picks
    Ghana 1, Uruguay 1
    South Korea 1, Portugal 2

In 2010, Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez were part of the Uruguayan generation that advanced to the World Cup semifinals. Currently, a new generation of Uruguayans is coming of age, and important players include Darwin Nunez, Fede Valverde, and Ronald Araujo. Portugal is entering a new age, perhaps in the wider shadow cast by Cristiano Ronaldo. Expect the Euro 2016 champions to advance from Group H in what may be the 37-year-final old’s World Cup.

    Round of 16 picks

    1. Netherlands over USA
    2. Argentina over France
    3. Spain over Canada
    4. Brazil over Portugal
    5. England over Senegal
    6. Denmark over Poland
    7. Germany over Belgium
    8. Uruguay over Serbia

Groups are matched in the Round of 16, and the winners from one group play the runner-up’s from the other. Due to their placement on opposing sides of the bracket, teams from the same group cannot play one another again until the final. In the round of 16, France may fall victim to the “curse of the reigning champions,” especially if it encounters an Argentina team that has improved significantly under Lionel Scaloni. Despite the threat posed by forwards like Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, and Diogo Jota, Brazil is still in the chance to move past Portugal.

    Quarterfinal picks

    1. Argentina over Netherlands
    2. Spain over Brazil
    3. England over Denmark
    4. Germany over Uruguay

A dependable center striker who can score goals is what Netherlands now lacks the most. That is not an issue with Argentina. Beyond Messi, their frontline include players like Paulo Dybala, Angel di Maria, and Lautaro Martinez. After defeating them in the Euro 2021 semifinals, England should have Denmark’s number. The quarterfinal match between Brazil and Spain would be a fantastic event. Spain should have the framework to manage games if they can maximize the opportunities they create. Germany will also have the expertise to defeat a still developing Uruguayan squad.

    Semifinal Picks

    1. Spain over Argentina
    2. England over Germany

The smallest of margins determine whether teams go to the World Cup semifinals, and not much would separate these four teams. However, England’s current squad has recent big match experience on its side and is currently a more strong team than Germany. Spain’s midfield could be the finest at the 2022 World Cup with strong players and this could give Argentina a run for their money.

    Final Picks

    Spain over England

Due to Southgate’s preference for his England squad to play with a strong anchor, the outcome of this match would be decided in the middle of the field. During Euro 2021, Kalvin Phillips and Declan Rice were favorites, but Spain was able to defeat the Three Lions and cut off Harry Kane’s supply line.

At Euro 2021, there was a feeling that Spain will soon lift a trophy soon and this could be in the near future in Qatar.
