Chelsea starlet Tammy Abraham eyeing Nigeria call-up

Chelsea starlet Tammy Abraham eyeing Nigeria call-up

Despite making his debut with the England national team, Nigeria rising star Tammy Abraham is still eligible to play for the Super Eagles in international games. The Chelsea forward is widely expected to shine in the 2019/2020 Premier League campaign, meaning that Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr is likely to keep an eye on the 21-year-old in days to come. Abraham has expressed desire to represent Our Boys on the international stage, but it remains to be seen if he is going to turn his dream into reality.

    Small signs

Considering that he has recently added a Nigeria flag to his Instagram profile, Tammy Abraham seems to be open to representing Nigeria national team at senior level. Abraham was born in Camberwell, London, England on October 2, 1997, but his parents are of Nigerian descent. His father is close friends with Nigeria FA president Amaju Pinnick, who claimed two years ago that Tammy had switched his allegiance to Nigeria.

Despite having two caps for England national team, Tammy Abraham is still eligible to play for the Super Eagles as he represented the Three Lions in non-competitive matches. The Chelsea attacker made his England debut on November 10, 2017 in a friendly against Germany which ended in a goalless draw, while playing 15 minutes in a friendly against Brazil four days later. Gareth Southgate’s troops played out a goalless draw with the South American giants as well.

Super Eagles in search for Odion Ighalo’s successor

Nigeria did remarkably well to win the bronze medal at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, with Odion Ighalo winning the Golden Boot. However, despite scoring five goals for Our Boys at the showpiece tournament in Egypt, the experienced attacker decided to retire from international football.

Considering that Odion Ighalo will not be playing for the Super Eagles anymore, there is a vacant position in Nigeria attack which could be filled with Tammy Abraham, who seems to be in the form of his life. Yet another player eyeing Nigeria call-up is Leicester City attacker Kelechi Iheanacho, who has been showing signs of improvement of late. The left-footed striker missed out on a place in the Nigeria Africa Cup of Nations squad due to poor form.

All eyes on Tammy in the 2019/2020 EPL season

Due to Chelsea transfer ban, Tammy Abraham will have a chance to prove his worth in the English top flight in the 2019/2020 season. The 21-year-old attacker scored 26 goals for Aston Villa in the Championship last term, helping the Villa Park outfit secure promotion to the Premier League. After ending his loan spell with the Villans Abraham returned to Stamford Bridge where new coach Frank Lampard offered him to wear No. 9 shirt.

The former Blues ace obviously has faith in Tammy, who is likely to play an important role in the capital club in the forthcoming season. Abraham found the net in a 2-1 pre-season win over Barcelona which gave him a confidence boost, but he will have to work hard in each and every training session if he is to earn a place in the starting line-up. One thing is for sure, Frank Lampard is counting on the striker of Nigeria descent for the 2019/2020 Premier League campaign.

Back Abraham to finish the season as Chelsea top scorer

Tammy Abraham looked unstoppable in the 2018/2019 Championship campaign, finishing the process in second place in the goal-scoring chart. Abraham played for Swansea City in the 2017/2018 Premier League season, meaning that the lack of experience in the top flight is not going to prove to be a problem for the Chelsea starlet in the upcoming season.

Blues first-choice centre-forward Olivier Giroud is on the twilight of his career and seeing that the France international netted no more than two goals for the Stamford Bridge outfit last term, we believe that there is a big value in betting on Tammy Abraham to finish the 2019/2020 Premier League season as Chelsea top scorer. Abraham is 9/4 at Betfair to do so.
