Uruguay have shown themselves as a tough customer and qualified for this tournament in second place to Brazil in South America. Argentina, Brazil and Colombia may steal all the headlines in the World Cup but Uruguay have gone about their business in a professional manner and look good. Portugal endured some tough games in their group and never looked particularly comfortable at any stage. However, the same can be said of their performance at Euro 2016 and having failed to impress at the group stages the Portuguese went on to win the tournament.

Uruguay started the 2018 World Cup with a less than convincing win over Egypt. It was a match they were expected to win but the performance was not great. The same can be said of their display against Saudi Arabia and Uruguay played out another narrow 1-0 win. The tournament came alive for them against Russia and Uruguay played well to defeat the hosts 3-0.
Portugal
Cristiano Ronaldo has once again been the main man for Portugal in this tournament. His hattrick allowed Portugal to pick up a point from their opening match against Spain in a thrilling 3-3 draw. The Real Madrid forward made the difference again in the second game against Morocco, scoring the only goal of the match. Ronaldo failed to score against Iran and Portugal were held to a 1-1 draw, so it is easy to see where their strength lies.
Uruguay vs Portugal Head to Head
This will be the third meeting between Uruguay and Portugal. Portugal won the first game 3-0 in 1966 and the second match finished 1-1 back in 1972. These results will not have any influence on this game.
Odds and Predictions
This has the makings of a very close game and both teams will feel they have a good chance of reaching the quarter-final. Uruguay are regarded as the slight favourites at 2.80 but with Portugal available at 3.00 and the draw at the same price, the bookmakers are not willing to make a big call on this one. With players including Diego Godin, Pepe and Jose Gimenez on the pitch, this has the makings of a defensive match. Both sets of players will be well drilled defensively but Uruguay have been the toughest of the two teams to break down. You can get 7.00 for Uruguay to win this match 1-0. Uruguay have two good strikers at their disposal and Luis Suarez will be aiming to score in his third match of this World Cup. Suarez is to open the scoring in this match for Uruguay but you can never discount the threat of Ronaldo, who is the favourite to get the first goal.
