Sweden vs Switzerland | Prediction, Betting Tips & Odds

The current Sweden squad are hoping emulate the success achieved by the class of ’94 which reached the semi-final of the World Cup in the United States.  This team were given little hope of doing that prior to the tournament but will now feel they have a great chance with the draw in the Round of 16. Switzerland have shown in previous World Cup tournaments they have what it takes to reach this stage of the tournament.  However, never before have they been given the opportunity to progress to the latter stages by drawing another unfancied team in the Round of 16.

    Match Preview

Sweden came into this tournament without the biggest name in their recent history, Zlatan Ibrahimovic.  However, despite the retirement of their talismanic striker, Sweden have developed into a good team throughout the 2018 World Cup and their final result against Mexico has added to their confidence. Switzerland have become a very tough team to beat rarely lose games.  The Swiss will be hoping they can keep things tight in this game but will be missing two key defenders to suspension and that could be a problem.  Stephan Lichtsteiner and Fabian Schar both picked up their second yellow card of the tournament against Costa Rica.

    Sweden

Sweden began the tournament in the best way possible, defeating South Korea 1-0.  This led them nicely into their biggest test, the match against Germany but despite leading with a man advantage, Sweden lost the game to late free-kick.  However, Sweden regrouped superbly to hand a 3-0 defeat to Mexico and win the group.

    Switzerland

The Swiss played the more difficult of their group games first and came back from a goal down to draw 1-1 with Brazil.  Switzerland also fell behind in their second match against Serbia but once again produced a good comeback to win 2-1 late in the game.  They completed the group stages with a 2-2 draw against Costa Rica, conceding an equaliser in injury time.

Sweden vs Switzerland Head to Head

With both being European nations, Sweden and Switzerland have met 27 times.  They each have 10 wins to their name and the most recent fixture between the teams ended in a 1-1 draw back in March 2002.

    Odds and Predictions

Switzerland are the bookmakers’ favourites at 2.70 to win this game, despite finishing second in their group and losing two key defenders.  Sweden ended their group campaign on a high with a big win over Mexico and could upset the odds in this one, priced 3.10.  The draw is available at 3.00. Both teams were involved in some quite high scoring games in the group stages of the tournament.  Sweden and Switzerland have seen over 2.5 goals scored in their last two World Cup matches and over 2.5 goals is 2.70. Sweden do not have one standout individual in terms of goal scoring but one thing you can guarantee is the presence of Andreas Granqvist on set-pieces and penalties.  This makes the central defender a tempting bet at 7.00 to score at any time.  Switzerland have also spread the goals throughout their team but Xherdan Shaqiri remains the major threat and is available at 7.00 to score first.

Sweden vs Switzerland Top Betting Tip: Draw (2-2)

This looks like being one of the more even contests in the Round of 16.  Both teams will see this game as a golden opportunity to reach the quarter-final of the tournament.  We could see the score level at the end of 90 minutes and the first penalty shootout of the 2018 World Cup.
