Sweden vs England| Prediction, Betting Tips & Odds

Sweden were one of the top nations in the early World Cup tournaments.  They reached the semi-final twice and the final once between 1938 and 1958.  However, they were forced to wait until 1994 to reach the last four again and could repeat the feat by causing an upset and winning this game. England fans must look back to 1966 to find the only time they lifted the World Cup.  The Three Lions have only come close once since then, losing to Germany in the semi-final at Italia 90.  This match provides the perfect opportunity for England to reach their first World Cup semi-final in 28 years.

    Match Preview

Sweden have shown how a good, organised defence and game plan can get your far in a tournament.  They have not been particularly exciting to watch but while other teams have struggled to cope defensively, Sweden have been strong.  The basis of their game in this match will be keeping a clean sheet. England have relied heavily on set-pieces for many of their goals in this tournament.  Against Colombia in the Round of 16, England failed to create any good goal scoring opportunities from open play and were gifted another penalty from poor defending.  England may find it difficult to break down Sweden.

    Sweden

Sweden began their 2018 World Cup campaign with a crucial win over South Korea and this set them up nicely for the match against Germany.  Despite leading and having a man advantage, Sweden lost the game in added time thanks to a Toni Kroos free-kick.  However, they responded superbly to defeat Mexico 3-0 in their final game to top the group.  Sweden were deserved winners over Switzerland in the Round of 16, creating the better chances to win 1-0.

    England

England struggled to get beyond Tunisia in their first game but scored a late goal to win 2-1.  There was little problem against a poor Panama team and England rattled home 6 goals to win 6-1.  Having rested several players, England lost 1-0 to Belgium and finished second in the group.  The Round of 16 game against Colombia was entertaining but the quality was poor.  Neither team did enough to deserve the win inside normal time and England won on penalties to secure their place in the quarter-final.

Sweden vs England Head to Head

Sweden and England have played 24 times, with England currently leading by the narrowest of margins.  England have won 8 games, while Sweden have 7 victories to their name.  The last time the teams met was in a 2012 friendly and Sweden won 4-2.  The teams also met at the 2002 World Cup and played out a 2-2 draw in the group stages.

    Odds and Predictions

Sweden won their group, which contained three other good teams and won their Round of 16 game in normal time against Switzerland yet come into this game as the outsiders, priced at 5.00. England struggled to get beyond Colombia in their Round of 16 game yet they are the favourites, perhaps due to the number of Premier League players in their squad.  England are 1.90 to win the match, with the draw on offer at 3.30. England have struggled to score goals from open play in their last two games and Sweden are going to make it difficult for them to score from set-pieces, which has been their main threat.  This could result in a low scoring game as Sweden do not have the quality of forward players to cause England many problems at the back.  Under 2.5 goals is 1.5. Harry Kane is the main man in attack for England and the top goal scorer at the 2018 World Cup.  If England win a penalty, he will step up to take it and can be backed at 3.75 to score the first goal of the game.  Emil Forsberg is Sweden’s best creative player and scored the only goal of the game via a deflection against Switzerland.  Forsberg is available at 5.50 to score at any time.

Sweden vs England Top Betting Tip: Draw (1-1)

Despite England being the clear favourites with the bookmakers for this game, Sweden have shown they have the game to stifle the England attack and make things difficult.  This could result in a cagey affair, with the teams remaining level and the possibility of another penalty shootout.
