Super Eagles making the headlines across Europe

This past week, a few Nigerian international have made the spotlight because of their performances and news of transfers. And this is all happening as the Super Eagles are gathering in the camp in Asaba to get ready for the important game against South Africa on Friday which could see them put a stamp on their qualifying for the AFCON 2019 in Cameroon.

On Sunday afternoon Arsenal were held at home to a 1:1 result by the Wolverhampton Wanderers. It could have been worse, but Arsenal managed to get themselves out of trouble a few minutes before the final whistle. Alex Iwobi, the Nigerian international, started the game for the Gunners but was then substituted at halftime which raised a lot of questions. After the game, the media outlets wondered what the reason was for the substitution as Iwobi played well although he couldn’t get a good enough chance to score. Fans have questioned the call on the social media. Unai Emery, the Arsenal manager, has since stated that he took Iwobi out as part of a tactical change.

The new part of the Nigeria squad, Samuel Chukwueze scored a brilliant goal for his side Villarreal in a 2:2 draw with Rayo Vallecano at the Campo de Futbol de Vallecas. His goal was the match opener and his left-footed shot has since been nominated for goal of the week in Spain. Before scoring, what is his first goal for the Spanish side; he also netted one against Almeria in the Copa Del Rey and also away from home. In the absence of Odion Ighalo, Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr will be glad Chukwueze is finding his strikers form.

Another Super Eagles attacker, Victor Osimhen is in line to pick up another Player of the month award for his Belgian side, Charleroi. He was struggling for playing time in his team Wolfsburg resulting in his loan to the Belgians. He was already POTM for September and with four goals in four games, he is favourite to pick up the award again for October.

Even the guys in defence are getting noticed. William Troost-Ekong, a trusted Eagles defender has been the name in the Serie A Team of the Week by SofaScore, one of the biggest live score apps in the world. Even though his team Udinese lost to Empoli in this last round, he played the full 90 minutes without a single mistake and making his presence known with good tackles and ball clearances.

Jamilu Collins, the Super Eagles left back, had some good news for Coach Rohr this week after he reported back to training following his injury. He also played For SC Paderborn in the last round. News has just surfaced that Stuttgart, the struggling Bundesliga side, are interested in bringing him over in the January transfer window if they can match his transfer price.
