Spain vs Russia | Prediction, Betting Tips & Odds

Spain entered the 2018 World Cup as one of the favourites to win the tournament.  They lifted the trophy in 2010 and enjoyed a spell of dominance at the top of the international game by also claiming the European Championship.  However, they need to bounce back from a poor 2014 World Cup. Russia have never been regarded as a favourite to win a major tournament and the same applies for the 2018 World Cup.  They are the hosts but you must go back to the 1998 World Cup in France to find the last time a host won the World Cup and Russia are not at the same level as that French team.

    Match Preview

Spain have come through the group stages of the 2018 World Cup without bringing too much attention upon themselves.  They played out on exciting match with Portugal to start the campaign but have not been particularly fluent in their play.  There have been questions marks raised over the performance of David De Gea. Russia have endeared themselves to the home fans with their results and performance in their first two games of the 2018 World Cup.  They secured their place in the Round of 16 with a match to spare but this is going to be a very difficult game for the hosts.

    Spain

Spain looked set to claim maximum points in their opening game against Portugal but conceded a late free-kick and were forced to accept a 3-3 draw.  This left them under a little pressure against Iran and it took a fortunate goal to secure a 1-0 win.  Spain were once again below par in their final match, picking up a late 2-2 draw with Morocco.

    Russia

Russia were delighted with their performances against Saudi Arabia and Egypt.  Not only did they win the games, they scored a total of 8 goals and conceded only one.  However, they were brought back down to earth in the final match, losing 3-0 to Uruguay and will need to up the level of their game to live with Spain.

Spain vs Russia Head to Head

Spain and Russia have met 6 times previously, with the Russians yet to claim a victory.  The Spanish have won 4 times and there have been 2 draws.  The teams last met in a friendly match in November 2017 and the final score was 3-3.

    Odds and Predictions

Russian fans will be hoping their players can rise to the occasion but there is little doubt Spain are the best team.  If the Spanish perform anywhere near their best they will have too much for the hosts and are the 1.61 favourites to progress. Russia are the outsiders at 6.50, with the draw at 3.90. Spain will be hoping to improve defensively in this game and with Gerard Pique and Sergio Ramos at the back, they have two of the top centre-backs in the game.  Russia may struggle to break them down and we find an offer for 2.37 for Spain to win to nil. Diego Costa is the main striker for Spain and the Atletico Madrid man has two goals to his name in the tournament.  Costa is 4.33 to score the first goal of the game.  Denis Cheryshev has been a strong attacking presence for Russia, scoring 3 goals to date and is available at 6.00 to score any time.

Spain vs Russia Top Betting Tip: Spain (2-0)

Russia are up against it in this match and while they will make a game of it, the Spanish are the better team and should do enough to go through.  If Spain can defend well, they should have little trouble in keeping a clean sheet.
