South Korea vs Mexico | Prediction, Betting Tips & Odds

South Korea will struggle to match their achievement of reaching the semi-final of the 2002 World Cup.  They co-hosted the event and caused a huge upset, defeating Italy and Spain on route to the semi-final before losing to Germany. It would be an even bigger surprise were they too repeat that performance in Russia. Mexico have regularly qualified for the World Cup finals and they are a familiar name in the tournament.  The Mexican team know what it takes to get out of the group stages and they have twice reached the quarter-final.  A similar performance in the 2018 World Cup would be a success.

    Match Preview

South Korea are not blessed with well-known names in the world of football.  Their squad is made up of many players who play in South Korea, with a sprinkling of talent in Europe.  Tottenham Hotspur’s Son Heung-min is their best player and will be the man expected to score the goals in this game. Mexico are in a great position coming into this match and know a win will see them on their way to qualifying for the Round of 16.  They have some quick, dynamic forwards in their team and their pace will cause the South Korean defence many problems in this match.

    South Korea

The first match against Sweden was very important for South Korea and they failed to deliver the goods, losing 1-0.  They are now faced with two tricky games, starting with this one against Mexico.  South Korea must show a greater attacking threat and need to get Son Heung-min move involved in the game so he can create chances to score.

    Mexico

Mexico caused one of the biggest shocks of the tournament to date when they defeated Germany 1-0 in their opening match of Group F.  Mexico were excellent on the break and created many good openings, taking one of them before half-time.  They could easily have scored more and it will be interesting to see how they adapt to playing against a team who are sure to defend much deeper than Germany.

South Korea vs Mexico Head to Head

South Korea and Mexico have met 10 times.  Mexico have come out on top 5 times, with South Korea winning 4 games.  Mexico defeated South Korea 3-1 at the 1998 World Cup and also beat them 4-0 in their latest match, which was a friendly in 2014.

    Odds and Predictions

Having recorded the win over Germany, Mexico will be expected to claim all 3 points in this game and the bookies have them as the favourites priced around 1.70.  South Korea need to improve from their showing against Sweden and are the outsiders for this game at 5.75, with the draw available at 3.80. Mexico defended well when required against Germany and will believe they can keep another clean sheet against South Korea.  You can get 2.50 for Mexico to win the match to nil.  Hirving Lozano was a major threat and got the Mexico goal against Germany but Javier Hernandez looked sharp and the striker is 5.50 to get the first goal of the game.  South Korea will be looking towards Son Heung-min to get their goals and the Spurs forward is 8.00 to open the scoring.

South Korea vs Mexico Top Betting Tip: Mexico win (2-0)

Mexico know if they can score the first goal of the game, they have every chance of going on to win it by a greater margin.  They were very good on the break against Germany and if South Korea start chasing the game, Mexico could hit them on the counter-attack and score a second goal.
