Serbia vs Switzerland | Prediction, Betting Tips & Odds

Serbia are a young football nation, having been formed in 2006 following the dissolution of Serbia and Montenegro.  Since then, Serbia have qualified for the World Cup once, which was back in 2010 and they were eliminated in the group stages.  Serbia are hoping to make history at this World Cup. Switzerland have qualified for each World Cup since 2006 but have never been considered as one of the top European contenders.  They came into this tournament having scraped through a playoff with Northern Ireland and not much is expected of them in Russia.

    Match Preview

Serbia have very little experience when it comes to playing at the World Cup although Branislav Ivanovic and Aleksandar Kolarov remain from the 2010 tournament.  With Brazil as the leading contenders in Group E, second place is very much up for grabs and could be claimed by Serbia with a win in this match. Switzerland have more experience than Serbia at the World Cup and much of their squad played in the 2014 finals in Brazil.  Switzerland finished second in their group and will believe they can stage a repeat of 2014 by winning this game and progressing to the Round of 16.

    Serbia

Serbia were delighted to come through their first group game against Costa Rica with a 1-0 win.  It was always going to be a tight game against a team who know how to defend but Serbia did create some chances in the first half.  However, it was a free-kick which decided the game and Serbia will be looking towards Kolarov to produce more magic from set-pieces in this match.

    Switzerland

The Swiss were expected to fall to defeat in their opening match against Brazil.  When they went 1-0 down, everyone watching the game thought Brazil would go on to win the game with ease.  Switzerland did not roll over and kept battling away, fouling Neymar numerous times to keep the Paris Saint-Germain forward quiet.  The Swiss equalised in controversial fashion from a corner after 50 minutes and defended well to keep Brazil at bay for the remainder of the match.

Serbia vs Switzerland Head to Head

Interestingly, this will be the first time Serbia and Switzerland have met, either competitively or friendly.  Therefore, there is nothing to look back on in terms of a head-to-head record but both teams have plenty of experience playing against European opposition and should know what to expect.

    Odds and Predictions

Both teams will come onto this game with plenty of confidence following the results in their first match.  Neither Serbia or Switzerland were particularly good going forward but both defended well and we could be in for a very close game.  The draw is on offer at 21/10 and looks decent value.  The is little to split them in terms of a winner and Serbia are 15/8, with Switzerland at 9/5. Prior to the second round of games, we are yet to see a 0-0 in the tournament but his could be the game which produces a goalless draw.  The 0-0 is available at 11/2.  If the deadlock is broken, do not be surprised if it comes from a set-piece.  Fabian Schar is 15/2 to score at any time for Switzerland with Branislav Ivanovic out at 17/2 for Serbia.

Serbia vs Switzerland Top Betting Tip: Draw (0-0)

Serbia and Switzerland are not blessed with great strikers and it showed in their opening games.  There is little to separate them in terms of ability, with the Swiss just edging it in terms of World Cup experience.  We could be in for a very closely fought game, with clear cut chances at a minimum.
