NPFL Round 19 Group B review

NPFL Round 19 Group B review

After a midweek round of matches, the Nigerian Professional Football League teams were back in action on Sunday and Monday.

The Plateau United fans at the New Jos Stadium were hoping for a better beginning to the match from their team but were left shocked when the visitors opened the scoring two minutes after kick-off. Anas Yusuf was the scorer for Nasarawa United.

However, there was no need to worry as Odoba Oche first scored an equalizer in the 25th minute before Kabiru Umar turned the score around seven minutes later making the score 2:1 to Plateau United. With two wins in five days, the hosts are now eighth in the table, a single point behind Nasarawa.

Two first-half goals were enough to give Kano Pillars a home win against Go Round at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano. Auwalu Ali Malam scored the opening goal in the 20th minute before Chris Madaki made it 2:0 to the hosts. Unbeaten in four matches, the Pillars have now moved to second place in the table while Go Round languish in 10th place.

Heartland and Abia Warriors provided us with a thoroughly entertaining encounter with six goals in total. The home side took the lead in the 11th minute through Nnamdi Egbujor. But before the first half ended, Ibrahim Olawoyin levelled the score for the visitors.

The second half gave us four more goals. Olawoyin scored again in the 59th minute to give the Warriors their lead before Jimoh Oni made it 3:1 to the visiting team in the 68th minute. Four minutes before the end, Fatai Abdullahi added another one. There was quite a bit of stoppage time and enough for Chigozie Igo Glory to get the second for Heartland.

The final score gave Abia Warriors a needed win after their inner turmoil, a win which put them in the tenth place. Heartland stay ninth and a point above them.

The newcomers Delta Force registered a rare away win at the El-Kanemi Warriors ground in Maiduguri. Ufuoma Ajamikoko scored the first goal in the 32nd minute and Osita Ogbo added another on in the ninth minute of stoppage time. A win was enough for them to move up to fifth in the standings while their opponents keep second place.

Leaders of the pack, Akwa United, met with last in the table Yobe Stars at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo. It didn’t take the home team long to open the scoring. Godspower Aniefok netter the first goal in the 15th minute of the first half.

The hosts were given a penalty in the second half but their leading scorer this season, Mfon Udoh, missed it. With the third win in a row and fourth in five games, Akwa United extended their lead to six points while Yobe Stars remained last.

The final match of the round took place on Monday. Gombe welcomed FC Ifeanyi Ubah at the Pantami Stadium. Adamu Mohammed scored the only goal of the game in the 13th minute. The hosts stay in 11th place despite their third win in five matches while the visitors record their second loss in a row but keep the fourth place.
