NPFL Round 19 Group A review

NPFL Round 19 Group A review

After playing during the week in round 18, the Nigerian Professional Football League teams were back in action on Sunday and Monday.

Sunshine Stars welcomed Niger Tornadoes at the Town Stadium after their defeat during the previous week. One goal settled the match and it went to the hosts. Chibundu Amah got the winner and his fifth goal of the season.

The visitors remained bottom of the table, level on points with Remo Stars, while Sunshine Stars moved up to the sixth place.

As for the Remo Stars, they made the trip to Lagos to take on MFM at the Agege Stadium.  And they were the ones to open the scoring when Victor Chidume found the net in the 23rd minute. The visitors managed to hold on to their lead at the break.

Hosts played better in the second half and they were rewarded with a goal in the 60th minute scored by Elijah Akanni. The shared points meant both teams kept their positions in the standings as they were before the kick-off.

In a derby match, Lobi Stars defeated Enugu Rangers 1:0 at the Aper Aku Stadium in Makurdi. The home side scored in the second minute of stoppage time, just before the break. Solomon Kwambe put the ball in the net. This turned out to be the winning goal even though the hosts played the last 30 minutes of the game a man down.

The win put Lobi Stars back in second place while Enugu Rangers stayed on top of the standings.

Kwara United and Rivers United played out a non-eventful goalless draw at the Sports Stadium in Ilorin. The point put the home team three points clear off the bottom while the visitors moved up to fifth in the table.

Fans at the International Stadium in Aba watched Enyimba survive a second half comeback by the Wikki Tourist to earn a point. The home team scored first through Ifeanyi Anaemena who successfully converted a penalty in the 13th minute of the game.

It was all about the visitors in the second half who piled on the pressure eventually scoring an equalizer. Promise Damala found the new in the 60th minute. A draw left Enyimba in third while Wikki, now three games without a win, went up to 8th thanks to two draws in the last two matches.

Bendel Insurance missed two penalties at home to Katsina United but still managed to win an exciting encounter. The referee awarded them a penalty two minutes into the game, but they missed it. But then, Adimorama Eze scored twice to give the home team a 2:0 lead going into the break.

The hosts missed another penalty in the 70th minute. And then, less than 60 seconds later, they were punished as the visitors pulled a goal back, courtesy of a Tasiu Lawal strike, his 8th of the season. But, Bendel survived until the final whistle to score three points and go up to seventh in the table, leaving Katsina down in ninth place.
