NPFL Match day 9 Group A review

NPFL Match day 9 Group A review

It’s mid-February and teams across Nigeria have already played their Match day 9 games. However, there are a lot of postponed matches to be played as only one team in Group A has played all nine of their scheduled games.

Just one match took place on Wednesday when Niger Tornadoes hosted Enyimba at the Confluence Stadium in Minna. Enyimba recovered from a loss to Wikki Tourists to beat Remo Stars in the last round, while Niger Tornadoes were looking to forget the narrow defeat to MFM.

The encounter finished with a goalless draw as neither team could find a good enough opening. The Tornadoes have earned seven points from nine games and are down in 10th place. Enyimba are slowly raising their form but sit third in Group A at the moment.

Bendel Insurance travelled to Akure to take on Sunshine Stars at the Town Stadium. The hosts beat Katsina United in the last round, in a match where the referee showed three red cards.

After a goalless first half, Bendel took the lead in the 64th minute through Junior Osaghae. The home side countered and levelled the score in the 75th minute. Anthony Omaka was the scorer and his goal was enough to earn a point for the Stars.

Sunshine Stars are in 2nd place, three points behind the leaders MFM. Bendel, with just a single win this year, move up to ninth place in the standings

After losing to Enyimba in the last round, Remo Stars needed to bounce back against Kwara United at the Gateway International Stadium. The visitors come into this match after an important 1:0 win against Enyimba on Matchday eight.

Mathias Ogwuche scored in the 20th minute to put the home side 1:0 up. But the visitors managed to equalize just before the break through Daberechi Anyanwu.

Ogwuche scored his second in the 70th minute to give Remo Stars the win and move them to eighth in the table. Kwara United are now just a point in front of them in seventh place.

The following matches were postponed until further notice:

Mountain of Fire and Miracles (MFM) stay at the top of Group A despite the fact they didn’t play in this round. Enugu Rangers and Lobi Stars stay at the bottom of the table as the only two teams in the NPFL who only played three matches this season.
