    NPFL Match day 9 Group B review

    One Group B match was played on Wednesday, while four games took place on Thursday in round nine of the NPFL championship. Out of the five matches contested, four ended in a draw.

    On Wednesday, Yobe Stars welcomed Plateau United at the Town Stadium in Damaturu. The visitors earned their second victory of the year against Go Round on Match day eight. Desert stars succumbed to a hard defeat against the Kano Pillars away from home.

    This game had a few chances and none of them were taken. The final score was a goalless draw. The point takes Yobe Stars off the bottom of Group B while Plateau United move up one place to eighth.

    Heartland played hosts to Gombe United at the Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri. Gombe went into this match confident after a big win against Nasarawa United in the last round. Heartland drew with FC Ifeanyi Ubah.

    The home side scored just after the half-hour mark with a goal from Chidiebere Ajoku. Halftime score was 1:0 Heartland. Gombe United tried everything in the 2nd half, making three substitutions before the referee awarded them a penalty a minute before the final whistle. Maurice Chigozie successfully converted the spot kick to earn his team a valuable point.

    Gombe United stay in 10th place, a game behind Nasarawa United. Heartland remain in third place, four points off the top.

    After suffering losses in the last round, both Go Round and Nasarawa United needed some points from round nine. They met at the Krisdera Hotel Stadium in Omoku for this match.

    The visitors went a goal up in the 26th minute after a goal from Ikechukwu Nwani. The home side equalized three minutes before the break. Adeseun Adelani was the scorer. The second half ended without any more goals so the final score was 1:1.

    Go Round have three wins, three draws and three defeats after nine games and sit in 5th place in the table. Nasarawa United are up to ninth spot.

    Akwa United travelled to Umuahia to take on Abia Warriors after they demolished Kada City in the last round. The Warriors were looking to bounce back from a defeat against El-Kanemi Warriors.

    Abia Warriors took the lead in the 28th minute through Chinedu Anozie but they couldn’t keep it for long. Akwa levelled the score in the 33rd minute courtesy of their leading scorer this year Mfon Udoh.

    Neither side scored in the second half making the final score 1:1. Akwa United move up a place to fourth in the table but with a game in hand over Heartland in third. Abia Warriors move to the seventh level on points with Kano Pillars in 6th and Plateau in 8th place.

    A single goal was enough to secure another win for Group B leaders FC Ifeanyi Ubah. This time they took on the El-Kanemi Warriors at the International Stadium in Nnewi. Emmanuel Ugwuka scored the deciding goal in the 34th minute.

    The defeat leaves El-Kanemi Warriors in second place, three points behind the top spot.

    The match between Kada City and Kano Pillars was postponed.
