NPFL Match Day 7 review – Group A

NPFL Match Day 7 review – Group A

Only a few days after round six, Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) teams played in round seven of this season.

Group A leaders MFM played away against Remo Stars. Adeniji Kabiru scored in the 13th minute for the away side. This was enough to get them their first win, and in fact, their first away points this season. Remo Stars remain in 11th place with just one victory out of six matches played.

After falling to their first loss in the last round, Rivers United hosted Kwara United. The game ended in a goalless draw.

Rivers United stay in third place with three draws in six matches. Meanwhile, Kwara United are still in 10th place, but now level on points with four teams in front of them. They are also a game behind Niger Tornadoes in ninth, who got their first win of the season in this round.

After three losses and three draws, the Tornadoes welcomed the Sunshine Stars at the Bako Kontagora Stadium. One goal was enough to secure their maiden triumph this year. Tanko Awall scored the decider in the 13th minute.

The Sunshine Stars went down to ten men after Anthony Omaka received a second yellow card. This defeat is their first of the season, having had two wins and two draws in the previous four matches.

Wikki Tourists played hosts to Enyimba who were looking to build on their win in the last round. And they started the game strong. Abdulrahman Bashir scored the opener in the 8th minute, his second goal in two games.

The home side responded and was rewarded in the 29th minute when Umar Abba scored. The score was 1:1 at halftime but soon after the restart the hosts struck again. And it was Abba with his second goal of the game in the 48th minute. Enyimba tried to get back into the game but Wikki held on to record a win.

Wikki Tourists move up to second in Group A. They are equal on goal difference with third place Rivers United but with more goals scored this season.

Katsina United play Bendel Insurance on Friday, February 8th, at the Muhammadu Diko Stadium. With a win Katsina will move to 2nd place. If Bendel win, they will move to either third or fourth place in the standings.

The match between Enugu Rangers and Lobi Stars was postponed for another time. Along with Katsina United, they are the only three teams in Group A who have only played three matches so far.
