NPFL Match Day 6 review – Group A

NPFL Match Day 6 review – Group A

After a few postponed matches were played during the week, it was time for Match Day 6 this weekend. Four games took place on Sunday and one on Monday.

MFM welcomed Wikki Tourists at the Agege Stadium looking for a third victory in as many games. Not much happened in a goalless first half. A single goal from Chijioke Akuneto in the second half was enough to settle this match.

With this home win MFM go top of Group A. On the other hand, Wikki Tourists record their 3rd loss this year leaving them eighth in the standings. Interestingly, the match finished without the referee showing any cards.

Niger Tornadoes, the only team in Group A to have played all their matches this year, were away to Katsina United. Martins Usule opened the scoring for the hosts in the 13th minute. That was the only goal action before the break.

In the second half, Katsina United increased their lead through Tasiu Lawal. He scored in the 55th minute and then again in the 67th minute. There was still time for the referee to give a late penalty to Niger Tornadoes. Eric Asamoah-Frimpong successfully converted the spot kick in the 90th minute. However, this was only a consolation goal and the match ended 3:1.

Niger Tornadoes remain at the bottom of Group A. Katsina United go fifth in the standings with two games in hand over Enyimba in fourth.

Sunshine Stars played Remo Stars at the Akure Township Stadium. The match was exciting from the start with two goals in five minutes. The home side took the lead in the 2nd minute through Fuad Ekelujuoti but the visitors levelled the score three minutes later. Bright Akpojuwewo got the goal for Remo.

The second half was as interesting but with only one goal. Alaba Adeniji scored for the Sunshine Stars in the 58th minute. This was enough to give the hosts a win making them the only unbeaten team in Group A.

Sunshine Stars move to second in the table in Group A having played one less game than the leaders MFM. Remo Stars are back in 9th level on points with 10th placed Kwara United.

After three matches without a win, Enyimba finally got one against Rivers United. A goal in each half was enough for the home side. Abdulrahman Bashir scored in the 37th minute for the host’s lead. Wasiu Alalade added the second a few minutes before the final whistle. River United record their first defeat of the season.

On Monday, Bendel played hosts to the defending champions Lobi stars. One goal decided this match. Charles Omokare scored it in the 68th minute. Bendel Insurance move to seventh while Lobi Stars remain in 11th place but with two games in hand over 10th placed Kwara United.

The match between Kwara United and Enugu Rangers was postponed.
