Nigeria are a team very much liked by the neutrals and their kit has been the most popular at the 2018 World Cup. The team need to play well to match their startling shirt. Nigeria cannot afford any mistakes in this final group game against Argentina if they are to progress to the Round of 16, something they did in 2014. Argentina are one of the biggest names in world football and carry a huge amount of expectation on their shoulders. The last time they won the World Cup was back in 1986 and they have reached the final twice since then. Argentina lost both games, including the 2014 World Cup final.
Nigeria have given themselves a good chance of qualifying from Group D and a point could be enough. They have the mobility and pace in their team to trouble anyone on their day and if they can hit their stride early in this match, will cause the Argentina defence all kinds of problems. Argentina must win this game to have any chance of making it to the Round of 16 at the 2018 World Cup. If they fail, it will be the worst performance at a World Cup by Argentina since 2002, when they went out at the group stage. One of their opponents in that group was Nigeria.
Nigeria struggled badly in their first game of the 2018 World Cup, losing 2-0 to Croatia. Much was made of the position of Jon Obi Mikel in that match, who was asked to play further forward and looked lost at times. Mikel returned to his natural central midfield position against Iceland and was prominent as they produced a very good performance and two great goals to win the match 2-0.
This tournament has the makings of being a disaster for Argentina and they have one more opportunity to put things right. They were poor against Iceland and a missed penalty by Lionel Messi cost them a win. Worse was to come against Croatia and Argentina were shambolic at times as they went down 3-0, leaving their future at the World Cup in huge doubt.
Argentina have the superior record over Nigeria in their previous meetings, winning 5 of their 8 games and losing only 2 to the African nation. They met in a friendly in November 2017, which Nigeria won 4-2 but Argentina won their meeting at the 2014 World Cup 3-2.
Despite playing poorly in both their previous matches, Argentina still come into this game as the favourites, priced at just 1.50. Given their performances to date, these odds do not present good value and Nigeria are out at 7.00, with the draw at 4.75. Previous meetings between Nigeria and Argentina have seen plenty of goals and we could be in for more of the same in this match. Argentina need to win and Nigeria also need to take something from what could be a very exciting game. Over 3.5 goals is 5.50. Lionel Messi is yet to get off the mark at the 2018 World Cup and will be under huge pressure to deliver the goods in this game. The Barcelona forward is 3.60 to get the first goal of the game with Nigeria’s hero from the win over Iceland, Ahmed Musa, on offer at 10.00.
Argentina have come into all three matches at the 2018 World Cup as favourites to win and have never looked good enough. In the short space of time they have before this match, it is hard to imagine what could change. Although they should score goals, Argentina could bow out of the tournament with a draw.
