Morocco vs Iran | Prediction, Betting Tips & Odds

It’s almost time for the 2018 FIFA World Cup to get underway, and while we’re still two weeks out from the first game of the tournament, the excitement is growing around the football world. The following encounter will be one of the first showdowns between two sides from Group B, and both will be considered heavy underdogs to qualify for the knockout stages. With that being said, both Iran and Morocco have been in good form as of late, and they’ll relish being undervalued in comparison to some of the other teams in the tournament.

    Match Preview

Iran and Morocco will have the honour of kicking things off in Group B, which could prove to be vital as they aim to build some momentum ahead of tricky games against both Portugal and Spain. Iran have been relying on their defensive capabilities for quite some time now, whereas Morocco appears to be one of the growing forces in African football as they also continue to focus on bringing the World Cup to their home country in 2026. Of course, it’s not considered to be one of the most appealing games for a neutral to watch, but we have a feeling this fixture could surprise some people.

    Morocco

Morocco may not be expected to get out of their group, but that doesn’t mean they should be looked down upon by the rest of the tournament. They’re more than capable of springing a surprise or two, and given that they won’t be under too much pressure, they may be worth keeping an eye on. They’re also on a phenomenal run of form with five straight victories, and it’s not as if they’re picking up these wins against unknown nations. Since October they’ve seen off the likes of South Korea, Ivory Coast and Serbia en-route to securing qualification.

    Iran

A lot has been made of Iran’s rise in the last few years, and while they aren’t exactly a force to be reckoned with amongst the elite countries in the competition, playing them won’t be an easy task for anyone in Russia. They’ve been known to frustrate their opposition defensively in the last few years, but they’re also starting to build up some confidence moving forward. They’ve won four of their last six games which includes victories over Algeria, Venezuela and Uzbekistan, although they did fall to a 2-1 defeat against Turkey last night.

Morocco vs Iran Head to Head

Bizarrely enough, these two nations have come head to head on more than one occasion off the pitch as well as on it courtesy of several politic disputes. While that may not be seen as important by some it could play a factor in the hostility that we see when the game finally kicks off. In addition to that, however, the two countries have played each other twice in professional football with Iran having the advantage. The Iranians won 2-0 in a Presidents Cup game back in 1978, before defeating them 4-3 on penalties in 2002 after a 1-1 draw in their LG Cup showdown.

    Odds and Predictions

In the battle of the under-appreciated Group B teams, bet365 believes that Morocco are the favourites with odds of 11/8 in comparison to Iran’s 12/5. A draw is currently being valued at 19/10, although, given the figures, it seems like they’re in the same boat as us in that anything could happen. Once again we shouldn’t be expecting goals galore with under 2.5 being 2/5 with over being priced at 15/8, although at the World Cup, you just never know what’s going to happen next.

Morocco vs Iran Top Betting Tip: Draw (0-0)

While we’d love nothing more than for these two teams to prove everyone wrong by going out there and scoring bucket loads of goals, it just doesn’t feel like something that’s overly likely to happen. They’re going to frustrate each other from the word go, and there will be a lot of nerves and tension in the air which we believe will mean a goalless draw. Still, that could all change, and there are still a handful of friendly games to get through as Iran battle Lithuania (June 8th) whereas Morocco still have a busy schedule ahead against Ukraine (May 31st), Slovakia (June 4th) and Estonia (June 9th).
