Mexico vs Sweden | Prediction, Betting Tips & Odds

Mexico have a long and varied history at the World Cup.  They have twice reached the quarter-final and only three times since 1938 have they failed to qualify for the tournament.  The current group of players have experience of playing tournament football in Russia, having participated in the 2017 Confederations Cup. Sweden also boast a strong history at the World Cup but their best times can be found back in the 1930’s and 1950’s.  Having failed to qualify for both the 2010 and 2014 World Cup finals, Sweden face a tough task to qualify from the group in this tournament.

    Match Preview

Mexico are in a great position as they are close to claiming their place in the knockout stages of the 2018 World Cup.  It remains to be seen if the manager will decide to give some of his squad players game time in this match but with the winners of the group likely to avoid Brazil, there is enough riding on the result for Mexico to take it seriously. Sweden know they cannot afford any mistakes in this match and must win the game to have any chance of progressing to the Round of 16.  The Swedes are also relying on a favour from South Korea but must take care of their own business first and try and take the game to Mexico without being caught on the counter-attack.

    Mexico

Mexico could not have asked for a better start to the 2018 World Cup as they defeated defending champions Germany 1-0 in their opening match.  The Mexican team did not allow the victory to go to their heads and they produced a hardworking display to defeat South Korea 2-1 and tighten their grip at the top of the group.

    Sweden

Sweden won a tight game 1-0 against South Korea and this set them up nicely for their second match against an under pressure Germany.  Having taken the lead in the match and seen Germany reduced to 10 men, Sweden conceded a goal in stoppage time to lose the game 2-1 and hand the initiative in the group back to the Germans.

Mexico vs Sweden Head to Head

Mexico and Sweden have played each other a total of 9 times, with Sweden leading the contest having won 4 matches.  Mexico have two wins to their name but the Swedes came out on top 1-0 in their most recent game which was a friendly in 2009.

    Odds and Predictions

This could be a very exciting game as although Mexico are close to qualification, they will want to win in an attempt to avoid Brazil in the Round of 16. Sweden have no choice but to go for the win but are considered the outsiders for the match. Mexico are the favourites at 2.40 and the draw is on offer at 3.30. Sweden will need to get on the front foot in this game but that could leave them open to the counter-attack of Mexico.  The Mexican team have shown they are very useful on the break and we could see quite a few chances in this game.  Over 2.5 goals and both teams to score is 2.60. Mexico’s striker, Javier Hernandez, netted his 50th goal for his country against South Korea and will be searching for another in this match.  Hernandez is  to open the scoring while Swedish striker, Marcus Berg is still looking for his first goal of the tournament and is to net the first goal of the game.

Mexico vs Sweden Top Betting Tip: Mexico (2-1)

Mexico are in great form and while their defence has not looked particularly sturdy, their attacking play has been great to watch.  Sweden could find the back of the net in this game but looked deflated after the Germany defeat and Mexico must be considered the favourites to take maximum points.
