Looking ahead at Super Falcons 2019 Women’s World Cup opening game

On Friday night the host country France comfortable started their campaign to win this year’s World Cup. They scored four goals to defeat the Korea Republic at the Parc des Princes in Paris.

Of course, France is in the same group as Nigeria, joined by Norway too. Norway and Nigeria are meeting on Saturday, June 8th at the Auguste-Delaune Stadium in Reims. The game is scheduled to kick off at 9 pm local time.

The Nigerian Women arrived in France on Tuesday with enough time to acclimatize to their surroundings and prepare for the start of the tournament. To remind you, while they were training in Austria, Super Falcons played two friendly games as a test. In the first one, they thrashed one of the best Hungarian teams Viktoria and beat a top Slovenian club Pomurje.

After arriving in France, the current African Champions felt confident they would make inroads in this year’s competition. In fact, Nigeria is one of only seven countries to have played in each of the previous World Cup editions. However, they will have to play as outsiders in this match since they won only three out of the 22 World Cup encounters so far. Norway, who made it to the last 16 last time around, is a clear favourite to win this encounter.

The national teams of Nigeria and Norway have met twice before. The Scandinavians humiliated the Super Falcons in 1995 scoring eight goals. The last time they played against each other was in the year 2000 when Norway won 3:1. Surely it will be third time lucky for Nigeria. Exactly 20 years ago was the last time they made it out of the group stages.

While France are probably going to win the group, the Super Falcons need to be better than the Korea Republic and get as many points to be able to qualify for the last 16 as one of the best third-placed teams, should they not finish second in Group A.

A good result against Norway would go a long way towards raising their confidence for the rest of the group stage matches. The rest of the team will look to the talented Asisat Oshoala to score goals. She’s just signed with Barcelona and been given a great honour to be an assistant captain. Hopefully, she can get her first World Cup goal on Saturday evening.
