Japan vs Senegal | Prediction, Betting Tips & Odds

Japan have very little history when it comes to the World Cup having first qualified for the tournament in 1998. However, the Japanese have qualified for every World Cup since and have twice reached the Round of 16. A similar outcome in this tournament would be regarded a success. Senegal shocked the world when they defeated France in the opening match of the 2002 World Cup. They reached the quarter-final of that tournament but this is only the second time they have qualified for the World Cup. The Lions of Teranga could be Africa’s greatest chance of winning the tournament this year.

    Match Preview

Senegal will start this match as the favourites with the bookmakers, mainly based on the superior talent in their squad. Boasting players including Sadio Mane of Liverpool, Kalidou Koulibaly of Napoli, Idrissa Gueye of Everton and M’Baye Niang of Torino, there is plenty of talent for Aliou Cisse to call upon. Japan do not have the same strength in depth as Senegal and will be relying on a core group of players to remain fit and in form for this game. Maya Yoshida, Shinji Kagawa and Yuya Osako all need to be at their best to give the Japanese a chance.

    Japan

Japan could not have asked for a better start to their 2018 World Cup campaign. The Samurai Blue came into their match against Colombia as the underdogs but took advantage of an early sending off and penalty to take control of the game. Despite conceding an equaliser, Japan came out in the second half in an attacking mood and sealed a shock 2-1 win from a corner. The Japanese team will be full of confidence going into this match.

    Senegal

Senegal matched Japan, winning their opening Group H by defeating Poland 2-1. It was not a great game to watch and Senegal took advantage of some poor Polish defending to score the two goals they needed for the win. Senegal did not play great football and may need to raise their game a little in this match as they relied upon a poor Polish display more than their own creativity to score the goals.

Japan vs Senegal Head to Head

Japan and Senegal have met three times in the past, with the African nation having the better of things. The first meeting between the teams at the Kirin Japan Cup in 1987 ended in a 2-2 draw but Senegal have won the two most recent friendly matches in 2001 and 2003.

    Odds and Predictions

Senegal come into this match as the favourites to win, priced at 2.30. They have enjoyed the upper hand over Japan in their past games and know a win should see them through to the Round of 16. Despite their victory over Colombia, Japan remain the outsiders for this match at 3.60, with the draw on offer at 3.20. Both teams relied upon poor defensive displays from their opponents in their opening games and we could see a cagey affair in this game, with under 2.5 goals scored. You can back under 2.5 goals at 1.53. Sadio Mane remains Senegal’s greatest threat going forward and the Liverpool man is 6.00 to open the scoring, with Japan’s Yuya Osako available at 8.00.

Japan vs Senegal Top Betting Tip: Senegal win (1-0)

The early sending off and penalty had a huge impact on Japan’s win over Colombia and the same circumstances are unlikely to occur in this game. If Senegal can keep 11 men on the pitch, they have the superior quality to come through and win what could be a tight match by a single goal.
