Japan vs Poland | Prediction, Betting Tips & Odds

Japan are on the brink of causing an upset and reaching the last 16 of the 2018 World Cup.  The Japanese were given little hope ahead of the tournament, having rarely threatened the latter stages of the World Cup and winning only 4 of their 17 games to date.  However, they come into this match in a good position. Poland looked strong in qualifying from the UEFA section and topped a group containing Denmark.  However, they have struggled in recent times to get beyond the group stages of the World Cup, having failed to do so in 2002 and 2006.  The latter of which was their previous appearance at the finals.

    Match Preview

Japan find themselves at the top of Group H going into the final round of games, something which they could not have imagined before the start of the tournament.  A single point is all they require to reach the Round of 16 but playing for a draw is a dangerous game. Poland have been eliminated from the 2018 World Cup and will be playing for pride in this match.  To say the Poles have under-performed in this tournament is an understatement and their level of play has been very poor throughout.

    Japan

The Japanese could not have asked for a better start to their World Cup campaign, defeating Colombia 2-1.  They were given a big helping hand via an early red card and penalty but still got the job done to take maximum points.  The game against Senegal proved tougher for Japan but they showed great fighting spirit to come back twice and get a draw.

    Poland

Poland were massively disappointing in their first game against Senegal and despite scoring a late goal from a set-piece, deservedly lost the game 2-1.  More was expected of Poland going into their second match but again they were poor, losing the game 3-0 to a Colombia team which dominated most of the game.

Japan vs Poland Head to Head

Japan and Poland have met twice previously and it was the Japanese who came out on top in both games.  Japan recorded a 5-0 victory in the 1996 Carlsberg Cup and won 2-0 in a friendly which was played back in 2002.

    Odds and Predictions

Prior to the start of the 2018 World Cup, Poland would have been favourites to win this game but things have changed.  Given their own bad performances and the surprise package of Japan, it’s the Japanese who now start as favourites to win the match, priced at 2.60. Poland have been pushed out to 3.10 with the draw available at the same price. Both teams have seen plenty of goals in their two previous group games but only one of them has been scoring freely and that’s Japan.  However, Japan are yet to keep a clean sheet and there are offers 5.00 for Japan to win and both teams to score. Takashi Inui has arguably been Japan’s best player at the 2018 World Cup and the Real Betis player opened his goal scoring account against Senegal.  Expect to see Inui getting forward whenever possible in this game and he is 5.50 to score at any time.  The tournament has been a disaster for Robert Lewandowski but the Bayern Munich striker will want to go out on a high.  Lewandowski is 4.33 to open the scoring.

Japan vs Poland Top Betting Tip: Japan (2-1)

Poland looked bereft of ideas when they still had a chance of qualifying from the group so it would be a surprise to see them offer anything different in this game.  Japan are full of confidence and should have enough to get the win and seal their place at the top of the group.
