France vs Belgium | Prediction, Betting Tips & Odds

The French squad is packed with talent and much was expected from them in this tournament.  While they have not always been at their best, their first World Cup final since winning the 1998 tournament is within reach.  Can Didier Deschamps lift the trophy as a player and manager? Belgium are just one step away from reaching the first World Cup final in their history.  Only once before have they reached the semi-final of the tournament and that came back in 1986.  They lost 2-0 to a Diego Maradona inspired Argentina and will be hoping for better luck this time.

    Match Preview

France have settled on a system at this World Cup with Olivier Giroud leading the line and Kylian Mbappe and Antoine Griezmann playing off the Chelsea striker.  They are unlikely to change their approach in this game and the pace of Mbappe combined with the guile of Griezmann will be their main attacking threat. Belgium delivered a great tactical display against Brazil and their second goal was fantastic, breaking away before Kevin De Bruyne delivered a tremendous finish.  Roberto Martinez has shown he is not afraid to change his tactics in this tournament and could do so again with right-back Thomas Meunier suspended.

    France

France topped a group containing Australia, Denmark and Peru.  The French did play great football but did enough to defeat Australia and Peru, meaning they could rotate the squad for the final group game against Denmark, which ended 0-0.  The French produced their best attacking football of the tournament to see off Argentina 4-3 in the Round of 16 and met another South American team, Uruguay in the quarter-final.  Raphael Varane opened the scoring from a set-piece and a goal keeping error saw them extend the lead and win 2-0.

    Belgium

Belgium topped Group G with a 100% record.  The Red Devils comfortably defeated Panama 3-0 and Tunisia 5-2 before beating England 1-0 with a much-changed team.  The Round of 16 game against Japan did not go to plan as the Japanese opened a two-goal lead.  However, Belgium came storming back to score 3 goals, including a last-minute winner.  The quarter-final saw Belgium meet Brazil and having benefited from an own goal, Belgium scored a tremendous goal on the break to make it 2-0 at half-time and held on for a 2-1 win.

France vs Belgium Head to Head

Being neighbours, France and Belgium have met many times, playing 73 games prior to this World Cup semi-final.  Belgium have the upper hand, with 30 wins to France’s 24 and their latest match, which was a friendly, came in June 2015, which Belgium won 4-3 in Paris.

    Odds and Predictions

Both France and Belgium have great quality in their squad and there is very little to choose between them on paper.  France have the more experienced manager and perhaps this gives them the edge, making them the favourites at 2.55. Belgium have shown what they can do against a top team in this tournament and many people will fancy them at 3.10 to win the game, with the draw on offer at 3.20. Both teams have found the back of the net with regularity at the 2018 World Cup and if we see an early goal in this game, we could be in for one of the best World Cup semi-finals in history.  Over 2.5 goals and both teams to score is 2.50. Antoine Griezmann and Kylian Mbappe are both on 3 goals heading into this game.  The Belgian players will be wary of Mbappe’s pace and this could leave Griezmann as they player with more space to score.  Griezmann is 6.00 with Bet365 to score the first goal of the game.  Romelu Lukaku had a great game against Brazil, despite not scoring and will be feeling very confident of adding to his 4 goals in the tournament.  Lukaku is 5.50 to open the scoring.

France vs Belgium Top Betting Tip: Belgium (2-1)

With the attacking talent on show, it would be a huge surprise if we do not see goals in this game. Both teams could find the back of the net but Belgium’s performance against Brazil will leave them believing they have what it takes to win this game and book a place in the 2018 World Cup final.
