While Croatia and Senegal may be preparing for two completely different groups at the World Cup, they both find themselves in similar positions. While they aren’t considered to be amongst the favourites, there’s a good chance of both sides reaching the knockout stages – and it wouldn’t be the first time. Croatia made it all the way to the semi-finals back in 1998, whereas Senegal managed to reach the quarter-finals four years later in 2002. They know what it takes to get the job done when nobody is paying attention, and they’ll aim to replicate that feat in 2018.

While Croatia aren’t as feared as they once were in the landscape of world football, they still aren’t a team to sleep on. They’ve got several high profile names in their ranks with experienced players Modric, Kovacic and Corluka all leading the way, and they’ll need to draw upon their quality in order to find the consistency they need. They’ve only won one of their last four games since their 4-1 first leg playoff win over Greece, and while they did show promise in their recent 2-0 defeat to Brazil, their physicality and determination won’t be enough for them at the World Cup.
Senegal
While Senegal weren’t considered to be huge threats a few years back, they seem to have experienced a resurgence which has left them being tipped as one of African football’s most promising sides heading into the tournament. While they may not have played the same kind of teams that Croatia have in the last few months, they’ve proven themselves to be a solid unit defensively with four clean sheets in their last six games. With that being said, goalless draws against Luxembourg and Bosnia & Herzegovina could concern some fans who want to know where the goals are going to come from.
Croatia vs Senegal Head to Head
Despite the parallels that can be drawn between these two nations, they’ve never actually squared off in international competition. It’s plausible to suggest that this will prove to be one of the only times that they end up going head to head on this kind of stage, and given how close we are to the actual World Cup, you’d think that they wouldn’t care all too much about this encounter: but you’d be wrong. Croatia need to prove they’ve got the attacking prowess necessary to deal with the teams in their group, and the same thing can be said of Senegal.

Senegal are definitely the underdogs at 4/1, with the draw being valued at 12/5. It won’t come as much of a shock to discover that under 2.5 goals is 4/7 with the over being 27/20, as both teams continue to go in search of inspiration in that department. In terms of the goalscorers, it’s clearly no secret that Croatia have the star power up top with Mandzukic (13/8), Kramaric (2/1), Perisic (2/1) and Kalinic (2/1) being the favourites to score anytime.

At this stage, all these teams need to be thinking about is keeping their squad fit and picking up some momentum prior to the World Cup. While Senegal won’t be easy to overcome at any stage during the tournament, it feels like Croatia have what it takes to overpower them in this game, and for that reason, we’re going to go for a somewhat unconfident 1-0 victory. Of course, gaining experience is going to be one of the main positives behind this game regardless of the result, with Croatia opening up their WC campaign against another African side in the form of Nigeria on June 16th. On the other hand, Senegal will play one more friendly against South Korea on Monday before taking on Poland in their first group stage game on June 19th.
