Colombia vs England | Prediction, Betting Tips & Odds

Colombia do not have a great tradition at the World Cup and many people are surprised to hear they are appearing in only their sixth World Cup finals.  A win in this game against England would see them equal their best ever performance by reaching the quarter-final. England have been poor at recent major tournaments but seem to be playing with more confidence under Gareth Southgate.  It may not be the most talented England squad we have seen at a tournament but they appear to be enjoying their football in Russia.

    Match Preview

Colombia are sweating on the fitness of James Rodriguez ahead of this game.  The Bayern Munich star limped off in the win over Senegal and there are huge doubts over his participation in this match.  Losing Rodriguez would be a massive blow to Colombia and would leave them short of creativity. England have no such worries and they rested several of their first team players in their final group game.  Harry Kane has been firing on all cylinders in Russia and will be feeling confident of adding to his 5 goals from the group stages.

    Colombia

Colombia suffered an early setback when they lost 2-1 to Japan in their opening game.  Going down to 10 men was the major factor behind the defeat and they bounced back to produce an excellent performance against Poland and win 3-0.  This left them a final game against Senegal and despite not playing well, Colombia won 1-0 to progress to the Round of 16.

    England

England started well against Tunisia but allowed them back into the game and a last minute goal from Harry Kane was needed to win the match 2-1.  There were no such problems against a shambolic Panama team who defended badly and England took full advantage to win 6-1.  England were afforded the luxury of resting players for the final match and lost a bit of momentum, going down 1-0 to Belgium.

Colombia vs England Head to Head

Colombia have played England 5 times in their history and are yet to win a game.  The last time they met was in 2005 and England won the friendly match 3-2.  In the 1998 World Cup, England won 2-0 and the best Colombia have done is two draws, in 1988 and 1995.

    Odds and Predictions

England come into this match as the favourites with the bookmakers, priced at 2.10.  However, Colombia will fancy their chances against an England team which struggled to defeat Tunisia in their opening group game.  The South American team are available at 4.00 to win the game, with the draw at 3.30. England have seen both teams score in two of their three matches at the World Cup, while Colombia have seen over 2.5 goals in two of their three games.  There are no second chances in the knockout stages and we could see more goals in this game.  The draw and both teams to score is 5.00. Colombia will be looking towards their experienced striker, Radamel Falcao to get the goals in this game.  The Monaco man was excellent in the win over Poland and can be backed at 7.00 to open the scoring.  There is little doubt which player is England’s biggest threat in-front of goal and Harry Kane is available at 4.00 to score the first goal of the match.

Colombia vs England Top Betting Tip: Draw (1-1)

England are the favourites for this game and much could depend on the fitness of James Rodriguez for Colombia.  However, Colombia reached the quarter-final four years ago whereas England have failed to get beyond the Round of 16 in their last two attempts.  This match could easily end level at the end of 90 minutes and we could be faced with the lottery of a penalty shootout.
