Belgium vs Japan | Prediction, Betting Tips & Odds

There has been a feeling for some time that the current group of Belgium players have got it in them to win a major tournament.  Time is running out for some of the older players, who will not return for another World Cup.  They must step up now or become part of a lost generation of players who failed to deliver. Japan have very little history when it comes to success at major international tournaments.  However, Japan have won the Asian Cup four times, the last being in 2011 and have finished runners-up at the Confederations Cup.  Can Japan go further in the World Cup than they ever have before?

    Match Preview

Belgium will see this is a glorious opportunity to reach the quarter-final of the 2018 World Cup.  Regardless of who the opponent might be in the quarter-final, there is an open feel to this tournament.  Belgium will believe they have the talent in their squad to go all the way this summer, starting with a win in this match. Japan caused a big upset when they won their first match of the tournament against Colombia and that result is what has carried them through to this stage of the World Cup.  Many people feel the red card for Colombia in that game gave a false impression of what Japan are capable of and they are the underdogs in this game.

    Belgium

Belgium struggled to break down Panama in the first half of their opening group game but increased the tempo in the second half to win the game 3-0.  A comfortable 5-2 win over Tunisia followed and Belgium qualified with a game to spare.  Despite making eight changes to the team against England, Belgium maintained their momentum with a 1-0 win.

    Japan

Japan enjoyed a dream start against Colombia, winning the match 2-1 thanks mainly to an early penalty and red card for the opposition.  The Japanese found Senegal a tough proposition but came from behind twice to pick up a point.  However, the 1-0 defeat to an already eliminated Poland has given cause for concern ahead of this game.

Belgium vs Japan Head to Head

Belgium and Japan have met 5 times and perhaps surprisingly it’s the Japanese who have the better record, winning two and losing one.  The last time the teams met was in a 2017 friendly match but Japan lost 1-0 away from home to a Romelu Lukaku goal.

    Odds and Predictions

Belgium look much the stronger team on paper and even if they do not play particularly well as a team in this match, they have the players to produce the moment of individual brilliance that matters.  Belgium are just 1.40 to win this game, with Japan out at 9.00 and the draw is on offer at 5.00. Belgium have arguably the most fearsome attacking line-up at this World Cup.  Boasting Romelu Lukaku, Eden Hazard, Dries Mertens and Kevin De Bruyne, there are goals throughout the team.  Belgium are 2.75 to score over 2.5 goals in this game. Having been rested for the match against England, Eden Hazard will return to the Belgium starting XI fresh and ready to make a big impact at this World Cup.  The Chelsea forward will be on penalty duty in this game and can be backed at 5.50 to score the first goal of the match.  Japan will be looking towards the midfield creativity of Takashi Inui, who has looked to get forward at all times and scored goals.  Inui is 9.50 to score at any time.

Belgium vs Japan Top Betting Tip: Belgium (3-0)

Japan have done well to reach this stage of the tournament but this looks like being a step too far for the Blue Samurai.  If they fall a goal behind they will have to chase the game and this is when Belgium will be at their most dangerous and could add to their goal tally, resulting in a comfortable win.
