You must only go back to the 2010 World Cup to find the last time Uruguay reached the quarter-final stage of the tournament and they went on to play in the semi-final, eventually finishing fourth. They have twice won the World Cup, back in 1930 and 1950 and it would be a tremendous achievement for a small country if they could do it again. France boast a squad of incredible talent but they failed to deliver in the 2016 European Championship final. The French have not gone beyond this stage of the World Cup in their previous two attempts and Didier Deschamps is under pressure to bring the best out of this group of players.

Uruguay have a great team ethic and a group of players who work well together in a system. They may not have many big names in the midfield but in defence and attack they have some of the best players in the world. The fitness of Edinson Cavani will key for Uruguay having gone off injured against Portugal. While Uruguay have great players in defence and attack, France have quality throughout the team. No one can deny they have arguably the greatest squad in the tournament and their spine of Hugo Lloris, Raphael Varane, Paul Pogba and Antoine Griezmann is exceptional.

Uruguay had little trouble in topping Group A. They were not good to watch in the 1-0 wins over Egypt and Saudi Arabia but they got the job done and this allowed them to express themselves more in the 3-0 victory over Russia. Uruguay delivered their best performance of the tournament to defeat Portugal 2-1 in the Round of 16, scoring two great goals.
France
Much like their opponents, France took a while to get going in their group games and started with a narrow 2-1 win over Australia. This was followed by another close game with Peru which finished 1-0 in favour of the French. France did not need anything from the game against Denmark but picked up a point to win the group. The match against Argentina in the Round of 16 was what everyone had been waiting to see from France, who scored some excellent goals in a thrilling 4-3 win.

Uruguay and France have met 7 times in their history, with the South American nation holding the upper hand. Uruguay have won two matches to France’s one and came out on top in their most recent encounter which was a 1-0 friendly win in 2013.
Odds and Predictions
The way they disposed of Argentina has given France a huge boost in terms of their betting odds for the tournament and the way they played means they start this match as the favourites, priced at 2.00. Uruguay cannot be underestimated having taken care of the current European champions and are available at 4.50 with the draw on offer at 4.50. Uruguay will not be as open as Argentina and France will need to work much harder to create good goal scoring opportunities. This could see chances reduced to a minimum and Uruguay would be happy to keep the score low. Under 2.5 goals is 1.47. Kylian Mbappe burst into life in the Round of 16 and set the tournament alight with his pace. Opportunities may be at a premium but Mbappe has the talent to produce something special and score. Mbappe is 6.50 to open the scoring. Both Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez present a big danger to the French defence, with Cavani at 7.00 and Suarez at 6.50 to score first.

Everyone will be looking forward to watching France again following the game against Argentina but they will not be in for an easy ride against Uruguay. The South Americans have the bit between their teeth and will be very tough to beat in this quarter-final.
